EPC Endorses Angela Kramer for ASI President + Announcements

The Empower Poly Coalition has officially endorsed Angela Kramer for ASI President. Angela has shown a steadfast commitment to progressing the sustainability movement on campus, both through her representation on the ASI Board of Directors and through her other various extracurriculars. She has exhibited leadership in the realms of environmental and social justice at Cal Poly, and we feel that she has a true understanding of the student voice. FREE Be the Change Conference [Saturday, May 3rd 10-4 @ Cal Poly]

Cal Poly Students,

Have you been wanting to get involved? Do you want to make real change on campus and in your life after college? If so, you are encouraged you to attend the 2nd annual Be the Change conference this Saturday May 3rd from 10am- 4pm. Hosted by the Empower Poly Coalition, Be the Change is a sustainability leadership conference focused on giving future leaders the skills to create a sustainable future.

This free event (zero-waste breakfast and lunch included) will feature keynote talks, engaging workshops, and time to meet and talk with students who are making real change at Cal Poly. Workshop sessions include:

  • Campus Organizing
  • Marketing
  • Grant Writing
  • Fundraising
  • Event Planning
  • Power Mapping
  • Intentional Living
  • Entering the Political Realm
Who should attend?
Students who are committed to making their communities, and world a better place. Regardless of what issues are important to you Be the Change will provide you with the skills you need to change the world.

Cal Poly Earth Day TOMORROW + Announcements

Empower Poly,

You are invited to attend Cal Poly's Earth Day 2008 with keynote speaker Robert Swan this Tuesday, April 29th at 11am in Chumash Auditorium.

Thanks to the Office of the President, the Cal Poly Surfrider Club and the Empower Poly Coalition are able to host
British polar explorer Robert Swan at Cal Poly as part of his 5 year "Voyage for Cleaner Energy" around the world. Mr. Swan will be sailing into Morro Bay Harbor on his wind, solar, and biofuel powered sailboat to talk to the Cal Poly community about clean energy and the importance of saving our polar ice caps.  Click here for a quick video about Mr. Swan.

Below are additional Earth Day events including a presentation from "Save our Seas", a Sustainability Club Fair, and tours of Robert Swan's renewable energy powered boat.

Come see a presentation on preserving, protecting, and restoring the world's oceans for future generations.

Keynote Speaker: Robert Swan- 2041 Voyage for Cleaner Energy
British polar explorer and climate change leader Robert Swan is on a five year sailing voyage around the world, and will be sailing into San Luis Obispo to discuss clean energy and the importance reducing greenhouse gas emissions. As the first person to walk to both the North and South poles alone, Mr. Swan carries a unique and important message about the furture of our ice caps. Railroad Safety Bike Trail Project
What: Help spread the word to friends and family about the Railroad Safety Bike Trail Project. SLO Rotary is leading a diverse coalition of community groups and businesses to fund the section of the trail that will connect Cal Poly to the downtown, car-free in the near future. Homelessness Awareness Button Sale
What: There will be a sale of buttons made from homeless childrens' art to raise money for the homeless shelter.

REMINDER
Elections for board of directors positions are tomorrow (April 22nd). Nominees will be be giving short speeches, then questions and voting will follow.

NEWS

Cal Poly CAN Campaign: "Cal Poly CAN sign the Presidents Climate Commitment and become worldwide leaders in sustainability." This month Empower Poly is launching the Cal Poly CAN campaign to urge President Baker to join 518 universities, including all 10 UCs and 5 CSUs, in a commitment to campus climate neutrality.

April 24th: "Bike-to-school day" - As part of a state-wide effort to promote health, wellness and cut carbon emissions, join us in biking to school.

"What I Learned on the European Smart Energy Study Tour"
What: Santa Lucia Chapter Sierra Club Meeting
When: 7pm, Friday, April 25
Where: St. Stephens Episcopal Church
The Santa Lucia Chapter of the Sierra Club just led 21 local residents on a two-week energy tour of Europe. Come and hear about their findings and what can be done in our country.


Community Earth Day Event
What: Earth Day Kid's Fair (part of SLO Earth Day festival). Volunteer teaching kids about the environment at one of 9 different stations, including composting, climate change, and animal diversity.
When: Saturday April 26th from 9-5. Volunteer shifts are 9-1 and 1-5 or any time you can make it.

What: The national tour unites a diverse panel of leading hip-hop activists, artists and youth politics experts to engage students and community leaders in candid, compelling conversations about ways hip-hop generation voters can organize to have an impact on this year's election.
